The Central Market (in Khmer called: Psah Thom Thmey, which means “New Grand Market”) is a large building constructed in 1937 in the shape of a dome. The dome is the center of the market and has a unique design which allows air ventilation to keep the inside cool. The four wings branching out from the dome are packed with stores selling all kinds of goods. The Central Market was designed by French architect Louis Chauchon in 1937. Before the Market was built, this area was actually a lake which was drained. When it rains now, the market still floods but it is difficult to tell whether this is because of the run-off or poor drainage. During the Franco-Thai war the Central Market Phnom Penh was bombed by Thai war planes. This caused heavy damage and the Central Market had to be closed. When World War 2 was over the market was rebuilt and opened its doors again for business. From 2009 to 2011, it underwent a large renovation funded by the French Development Agency.

Old Market (Phsar Chas) is a centrally located, local market, behind Night Market just one block west of riverside in the south end of the Old French Quarter. If you are looking for typical Cambodian souvenirs then you have come to the wrong place but if you want to get a glimpse of the local culture this is the market to go to. Locals come to Phsar Chas to buy almost everything; fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, household supplies, clothes, shoes, motor cycle parts, religious items and jewelry, or to get their hair and nails done or to get something tailored or fixed. You could almost say it is like a Cambodian Wallmart. If you want to buy fresh fish and vegetable you should try to get there as early as possible before the best goods are sold out. Some of the stalls open already around 5am and at 6am you can expect all of them to be open. In the late afternoon, from 4pm, food vendors and fruit sellers set up mats along Street 13 in preparation for the evening market.

Kandal Market is a genuine local market that is located in the center of Phnom Penh close to Riverside. The Market is filled with goods like clothes, jewelry, shoes, bags but the majority of it is fresh food for the locals.
